Much to do at the museum
From June 14 through Aug. 19, the Crawford W. Long Museum will be holding History Camp for 1st-5th graders. Children get a chance to explore the “Wild West” with exciting hands-on projects, games, studio activities and recipes to share with their families. Cost per session is $5, which covers the cost of supplies.
The “In Their Own Words: A Look at Jefferson’s Past” exhibit has begun and runs through Aug. 5. Learn about Jefferson’s beginnings, from the origins of its name to the businesses and schools that thrived here long ago.

The Great Turtle Race
The Tree House is holding a Jackson County version of the Great American Duck Race held annually for eight years in Winder. To be held in Jefferson at Crow’s Lake on Saturday, Aug. 12, the new Great Race will instead feature turtles. The event will also include a children’s festival.
The plastic turtles cost just $5 each and earn their “adopters” a chance to win a customized golf cart that looks like a turtle, a Chrysler 3000M, a package for four to golf at the Chateau Elan and Georgia Club golf courses and more.
The Tree House is the children’s advocacy center for the Piedmont Judicial System.

Swingin’ on the Grapevine
Tickets have gone on sale for Château Élan’s annual Summer Concert Series, Swingin’ on the Grapevine,which begins July 1 and runs through Sept. 3. Concerts are held 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. on the Winery Lawn at the Château; picnic baskets are welcome.
Cost of ticket is $30 and includes free dance lessons an hour before every concert from 7:30-8:30 p.m. See

Lots to do at Jackson County libraries
Jackson County has nine special jewels—its libraries. In addition to holding a number of activities for children, adults can find plenty to do as well.
At the Braselton Library, Bookworm’s Story Hour is held every Friday at 11:45 a.m.
In Jefferson, the Jefferson Book Club meets at the library every second Wednesday of each month for book discussion and lunch. Story times are held year round on Mondays at 1 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:15 a.m.
The Jefferson Quilting Bee also meets at the Jefferson Library on the last Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Commerce Library is the site of Bookvine, a book club discussion with refreshments held every third Friday at 1 p.m. The Investment Club meets there on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Vacation Reading Club enrollment began May 22 for ages up through 14; this year’s statewide theme is Once Upon a Time.
In addition, the Pendergrass Public Library offers children’s programming, and Maysville and Commerce offer
children’s and adults’ programming.

Cooking with The Carriage House
Learn to prepare and cook an assortment of specialty dishes at The Carriage House in Jefferson, 1235 Athens St.
All classes are held on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Classes cost $50 to $85 and group discounts are available. The Carriage House will provide participants with a chef’s hat, apron and a workbook. Number of people per class is limited, so call in advance for reservations. For more information call 706-367-1989.

Low-cost vaccination clinics
Petsen$e is holding on-going low-cost vaccination clinics, which are held every week on Wednesdays and Fridays, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., and Saturdays 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Attending veterinarian Dr. Mallory Tate, DVM, works for the CDC in Atlanta and has set up clinics all over the country for the military.
The Commerce Petsen$e is a test store, and if it is successful, the company will replicate the clinics in other stores across the country, says Manager Mike Benson.
Petsen$e is located in Tanger Town Centre, commonly referred to as Tanger 1, in suite 290 on the side with Nova Cinemas.
